Decorating Your Home
Have you heard the expression, “Bloom where you are planted?” Keep this
expression in mind when you think about your living conditions. There
will be times (especially in the beginning of your marriage) that you
are not in your “dream home.” Be faithful with what you have.
Years ago I lived through a period where most of my friends were in new
or larger homes than I was. I was not bitter or envious, but I did
desire to have a nicer house. I kept my house picked up and cleaned, but
didn’t really do any decorating or extras. God gave me a verse to live
by:
‘Well done, my good servant!’ his
master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small
matter, take charge of ten cities.’
This really started to make sense to
me when a good friend of mine sold her house and moved into a rent house
while they built another one. While she was in the rental property, she
painted and put up new wallpaper. She kept it clean, organized, and
decorated. Seeing the way she responded to a temporary situation made a
lasting impression on me. Bloom where you are planted!
Enjoy, appreciate, decorate, and take care of what God gives you at the
time. Be patient and faithful with what you have and in His timing, more
will come.
Decorating Tips
*The most important aspect of decorating your house is to always
remember that it should reflect your family’s personality and the things
you enjoy. You may not have much experience in decorating. You may not
even realize what you like when you begin decorating. Finding out your
style is the first step. To do this, watch as many decorating shows on
TV as possible (HGTV is filled with great shows), look through home
magazines, tour model homes, and look at friends and neighbors’ homes.
It will be easy to see what style you are drawn to.
*Decide on the colors you like. This
will help as you are planning and shopping. Again, the colors you choose
need to reflect who you are and what you like. All rooms do not have to
have the same color scheme. However, a good rule to use is that if you
can see one room from another, try to have at least one common color to
tie the rooms together.
*When choosing colors, keep in mind that lighter-toned colors make the
room appear larger, while darker colors make them seem smaller.
*Mirrors also make rooms appear larger than they are. |
