Devotional

Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs 31:31

Since I first began teaching, I have used rewards on a consistent basis. I have found that the students will do almost anything if there is a reward in sight. However, I have heard some teachers say that 6th graders will not work for rewards, that they are too old. To me that is just ridiculous. Don't we still work for rewards as adults? It is nice to get a pat on the back, a little praise here and there, or how about a raise! I don't think rewards ever lose their appeal. If so, the Bible wouldn't talk about the rewards available to us.

"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded." 2 Chronicles 15:7

As you can also see from the scripture, rewards are not gifts, they are earned. To earn things, we have to work for them. Please don't confuse this with salvation which is a free gift. Many times the work we are called to do is laborious, tiring, and at times it can be hard to see results. If the Lord has called us to these tasks, we must continue to work diligently anyway. Remember, a lot of times rewards don't come easily. If we can keep the goal or reward in sight, it will be easier to continue with His work.

When we think about rewards in the workplace, most of the time they are connected with money - bonuses, raises, etc. These are rewards of our hard work and time invested. Heavenly rewards are even sweeter than the monetary ones. When you invest time into a person, you may be able to earn their trust. That is priceless! Breaking down walls, making a difference in lives, leading people to accept salvation, and seeing those you've invested in living right are also rewards that you just can't put a price on.

The second part of Proverbs 31:31 talks about "Praise at the city gates." For years I have just seen this as public recognition. On an earthly basis, I guess that is true. However, back in January, a friend of mine, Traci passed away suddenly. She truly was one of the Godliest women I have ever known. As I read this scripture a few days after her death, a new perspective came to me. This was more than public recognition on earth, she was hearing, "Well done My good and faithful servant" at the City Gates of Heaven! This really helped me deal with her death. Knowing that her struggles here on earth were over and that she was now receiving Heavenly rewards was comforting. When it appears that no one notices what you do or when you start to feel discouraged, remember that your reward will be waiting in Heaven.

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:17- 18

I challenge you to take a look at all the rewards mentioned throughout the Bible. Look at the ones you receive daily, and look forward to the ones yet to come. They will help motivate you as you make a difference in this world. As far as my classroom is concerned, I will continue to use rewards. Whatever works!

Mission Opportunity

It was just a year ago that several of you supported my husband as he ministered to the people of Uganda. This year a friend of mine, Sue Sewell, has an amazing opportunity to minister to the people of Africa as well. Please prayerfully read her letter below.

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope this letter finds you and your family happy and healthy. I am contacting you to let you know that I am fulfilling a dream of going on a mission trip to Zambia, Africa this summer.

I am going with a team of close friends from my area. We will be leaving Thursday, July 2nd and staying for 2 weeks. The schedule is to minister to and pray with people the first week at a conference. This conference will be bringing people not only from it's own country but also from the 9 surrounding countries. People there are so poor that they will walk for days to weeks to attend and receive prayer and ministry for their many, many sufferings.

After the conference, we will be visiting orphanages. One in 3 adults in Africa has HIV/AIDS, and as you can imagine there are more orphaned children than what the government can feed and clothe. That's exactly what we will be doing - buying mass bundles of food and clothes, along with praying and giving love to these impoverished children, and letting them know the world has not forgotten them. The Bible calls us to take care of the poor. We are going there to do this very thing. Maybe you can't go physically, but you can help these children by helping me go.

You can also imagine the mission costs are very high. Airfare, lodging, and food will cost about $5,000. But most importantly, the dollars sent to us will go directly to the care and support of these people.

If you feel led, please donate to this trip, whatever is on your heart. If you do not feel led to provide donations at this time, please just keep us and the people of Africa in your prayers.

May God Bless You,
Sue Sewell

Tips & Ideas

*For a nice and easy glaze, microwave a can of cake frosting until it is melted. Pour or drizzle it over cookies, cakes, or other desserts.

Just for You!

* Pray without ceasing!

* I use water-proof mascara, so removing it can be a chore, even with special make-up removers. I have found that if I coat my lashes at night with Vaseline and leave it on overnight, the mascara comes off easily with one of the make-up remover pads. My lashes are in much better condition now.

* I have recently discovered the benefits of Fish Oil. I had a mom of an ex-student asking me about natural remedies for ADHD, so I did a little research. I discovered that Fish Oil with high amounts of DHA are great for:

Memory
Focus & Reasoning
Concentration
Less Depression
ADD
ADHD
Cholesterol
Blood Pressure
Arthritis

Keep in mind that all people and situations are different. You may check with your doctor or someone at a health food store before adding any supplements. However, the mom I mentioned got liquid DHA for children, and her son has made remarkable improvements!

A Year of Crockpotting

I am not sure how I came across this blog, but if you like using a crock pot, this is the blog for you. Stephanie O'Dea is the creator of A Year of Crockpotting. She actually has enough crock pot recipes for an entire year. The following recipe really caught my attention, but I have not had the chance to make it yet. I will let you know when I do.

CrockPot Barbecued Pulled Pork Recipe

4 pounds boneless pork shoulder
1 onion, sliced in rings
2 cups ketchup (a 24oz bottle seems to be exactly 2 cups. weird.)
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Use a 6 quart crockpot. Trim meat, and place into your crockpot. Add sliced onion. Squeeze in 2 cups of ketchup, and then pour 1/2 cup warm water into the ketchup bottle and shake. Pour the ketchup-y water into your crock. Add vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire, Tabasco and salt. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until meat shreds easily with a fork.

Serve over rice, or make sandwiches on rolls or sliced bread.
